The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) is pleased to announce that fare-free transit service will continue from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, thanks to funding provided through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and MassDOT.
Fare-free service includes:
• Fixed Route Bus Service
• ADA Complementary Paratransit Service
• Non-ADA Paratransit Service
• Senior Rural Transportation Program
This continued investment allows BRTA to provide accessible and affordable transportation throughout Berkshire County while helping residents connect to employment, healthcare, education, shopping, and community services.
The fare-free program has resulted in significant ridership growth. During FY 2025, fixed route ridership increased by 13.76%, with 613,408 passenger trips compared to 539,225 in FY 2024—an increase of 74,183 riders. ADA Complementary Paratransit ridership increased by 17.6% during the same period, providing 31,631 passenger trips compared to 26,897 in FY 2024.
BRTA’s Senior Rural Transportation Program serves residents age 60 and older living in Alford, Becket, Clarksburg, Florida, Hancock, Hinsdale, Monterey, Mount Washington, New Ashford, New Marlborough, Otis, Peru, Richmond, Savoy, Washington, West Stockbridge, and Windsor. Service is available Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. An application is required prior to service, and trips must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
